Back in the early 90s I had the special experience of working alongside Frank, even being allowed to share the teaching of physics with him! I have never worked with a science teacher with such an in depth knowledge, passion for his subject, and ability to reach out to his beloved students. An exceptional teacher! Frank Murphy, a key figure in our Runnymede’s history. His teaching has crossed many borders, in fact here I am writing from my hometown Caracas in Venezuela remembering those days so long ago in Madrid at the house at Arga street where the school used to be. A life lesson I always remember he gave one of those hot summer afternoons at 4pm in Arga: If you take a punch in the face and heroically stand for it you’ll have to cope with all the force vector at once. If you roll down to the ground with the punch instead, as in the movies, then you will be able to minimize it and stand up again to fight back.

Sad news for my Runnymede College school mates around the world. Our form teacher and close family friend Frank Murphy (forever Mr. Murphy) has suffered a severe brain haemorrage and is on life support only to fulfil his wish to donate his organs. An example to all of us as a teacher and person – integrity, kindness, friendship, eloquence, wit, humor and a sharp mind are just some adjectives that come to mind…. and of course generosity! With all of us, his «little people» and now even in his last living moments with a selfless act. It is hard to describe the subtle yet powerful influence Mr Murphy had on me and my career choices. Mr Murphy represented the figure of a mentor during my adolsecence putting light when guidance was required, always with a sweet point of irony. Awesome teacher, no matter what our individual abilities were, he always pushed us to be our best.
Had classes with him in the early 80s – not sure if he ever changed but at that time he had a thick accent (you could tease him by asking if it was Scottish), was always full of stories and sports references. So many great stories, but two favorites were related to his time in Africa – having to iron his clothes in the AM get rid of any critters that may have crawled in overnight; and hunger relief services arriving and promptly looking for their dinner.
